Maui Hotel & Lodging Association’s 23rd annual Excellence in Education golf tournament’s winning team (23rd place) was Joseph D. Pluta Realty: Art Ortiz (from left), Chris Deevers, Joe Pluta and Hayeon Ortiz.

The Maui Hotel & Lodging Association’s 23rd annual Excellence in Education presented by Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits of Hawaii golf tournament took place Aug. 16 at Ka’anapali Golf, The Royal Course. The sold-out event raised $37,000 to support youth scholarships.

The visitor industry event celebrated 23 years of giving back to Maui’s future business leaders by raising scholarship funding for the following programs: Academy of Hospitality & Tourism Academies at Baldwin, Lahainaluna and Maui high schools; UH-Maui College Culinary Arts and Hospitality & Tourism Programs; MHLA Member Scholarship Program; and Maui Junior Golf.

“The Maui Hotel & Lodging Association is committed to giving back to the community and one of those ways is by providing scholarship opportunities to invest in our youth, the future business leaders of Maui County,” says Lisa Paulson, executive director for the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association.

The top teams received prizes ranging from hotel stays to dining certificates to golf rounds and other merchandise. The team that placed 23rd, Joseph D. Pluta Realty, received special honors and noted as the “winning” team — a tribute to the 23rd annual event. Top finishers included: 1. Market Advantage; 2. The Westin Nanea Ocean Villas; 3. Central Pacific Bank; 4. Tri-Star Restaurant Group; 5. VIP Food Service; 6. Andaz Maui; 7. CMSI (Creative Customs); 8. Grand Wailea; 9. The Fairmont Kea Lani; 10. Hyatt Regency Maui.
