Service trips set at national park

The Friends of Haleakala and Haleakala National Park will host a service day at the plant nursery in the Summit District 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 5, and another in the crater from Nov. 11 to 13.

Volunteers interested in the nursery service day should call 572-1584 for a reservation. Most of the service work is done inside. Volunteers can drive up to the location of the work, and may carpool with the group from Hannibal Tavares Community Center in Pukalani at 8 a.m.. Participants should bring water, lunch and snacks, and their own gloves if desired. The park will provide other tools. Wear sturdy shoes, and in case of outdoor planting work, bring a hat and sunscreen.

Volunteers for the crater trip stay free for 2 nights in Holua Cabin while doing work to protect native plants and nene habitat. The group will hike in and out on the Halemau’u Trail.

Participants must be physically fit and able to hike long distances in and out of the crater carrying a backpack with their sleeping bag, personal items and a share of the food. Tools are provided by the park.
