Baldwin graduate serving aboard the USS Essex

WENNY VALLECERA, Personnel specialist

Wenny Vallecera of Wailuku has achieved her dream of serving in the Navy.

Vallecera graduated from Baldwin High School in 2016, and is now a personnel specialist aboard USS Essex, an amphibious assault ship at Naval Base San Diego.

She recently was promoted to petty officer third class.

“I get to serve my country, travel the world and experience new things that I would not have done if I had not joined the military,” Vallecera said in a news release posted by American Connections Media Outreach. “The work is great, and I am always learning something.”

More than 1,000 men and women make up the ship’s crew. An additional 1,200 Marines can be embarked.

Vallecera’s main responsibilities include processing payroll and administrative paperwork for all the sailors on the USS Essex.

“I learned to take everything easy and not to let the work stress you out,” she said. “Take everything step by step and maintain a good work life balance.”
