Employee donations to United Way support families in need
Hawaiian Electric & HEI employees on Oahu, Maui, Hawaii, Lanai and Molokai raised $37,516 for Aloha United Way, Maui United Way and Hawaii Island United Way after hearing about HEI Charitable Foundation’s $75,000 donation in March. The HEI Charitable Foundation matched every dollar donated by employees, raising the current contribution to $75,032 and bringing the overall total to $150,032.
This employee-driven donation will go toward the Hawaii COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund, which helps to provide financial relief to those at risk of losing their home or utility services through AUW’s COVID-19 Rent & Utility Assistance Program.
The total donation to Maui United Way was $16,780. There was a $10,000 donation by HEI Charitable Foundation on behalf of Hawaiian Electric on Maui in mid-March. In April, $3,390 was raised by Hawaiian Electric employees on Maui. In May, there was a $3,390 match by the HEI Charitable Foundation.
In addition, the HEI Charitable Foundation donated $40,000 to Maui United Way in early March of this year.
“Because of COVID-19, our communities are experiencing severe economic crisis,” said Connie Lau, HEI president and CEO. “Many families are struggling to pay for basic human needs, including rent and utilities. By supporting Aloha United Way’s COVID-19 Rent & Utility Assistance Program, we can help keep people in their homes and relieve some financial stress. We hope our donation will inspire others to give if they are able.”
