Grow Some Good and Maui Family YMCA recently announced their formal partnership to address food insecurity on the island of Maui. This need was present before COVID-19, however it has been exacerbated by the current pandemic crisis.

The two organizations are collaborating on the following:

• Construction of a community garden at the YMCA site in Kahului.

• Providing fresh produce and plant distribution service.

• Facilitating gardening and nutrition education workshops.

“I am so excited to be partnering with like-minded people who support healthy living, youth development, and social responsibility — the building blocks of the YMCA,” said Mike Morris, YMCA president and CEO.

“Though school gardens have been our main focus for the past 10 years, it has always been our intention to establish community gardens as well,” said Kathy Becklin, executive director of Grow Some Good. “COVID-19 emphasized the community’s need for education and support in growing food. We look forward to working with the YMCA far into the future.”
