Seven students receive $1,000 scholarships

The Royal Order of Kamehameha 1, Kahekili Helu Eha and the Hui O Na Wahine O Kamehameha Scholarship fund provides financial assistance to Hawaiian students seeking self-improvement through education beyond high school. Scholarships are funded through kalua pig sales and private donations.

The Royal Order of Kamehameha 1, Kahekili Chapter 4 Wailuku and Hui O Wahine O Kamehameha recently awarded seven $1,000 scholarships to the following recipients for the 2020-21 school year:

• Erica Leimahinanue Pilotin — Graduated from Seabury Hall. She is in her third year at the University of Arizona studying architecture. She hopes to return to Hawaii and work on building homes that are eco-friendly. She is currently on the dean’s list at the University of Arizona.

• Kauakeakipunikawekiu Awana — Graduated from Kamehameha Schools Maui and will be attending the University of Hawaii at Hilo. She will be majoring in Hawaiian studies with a minor in education. She aspires to be a future educator on Maui.

• Kuualoha Keiko Bailey — Graduated from Kamehameha Schools of Maui. She plans on attending Grand Canyon University, Ariz., and major in nursing. She plans on becoming an emergency room nurse. She also participated in MIL softball and air riflery.

Awana

• Tiliti Maiha’a Adams — Graduated from Kamehameha Schools of Maui. He will attend Witworth University in Spokane, Wash. He plans on majoring in kinesiology. He participated in MIL football and basketball and plans on coaching at the collegiate level.

• Kapena Kirk Kamai Jr. — Graduated from Baldwin High School. He will be attending Shasta College in Oregon and will major in criminal justice. He wants to be a policeman, specializing in forensic investigation. He participated in MIL football and baseball and received all-star recognition in football as a wide receiver.

• McKenzie Hailey Acob-Freeland — Graduated from Baldwin High School. She will attend Grand Canyon University in Arizona and major in physical therapy. She is an honor roll student and was recognized as a MIL wrestling and judo champion.

• Liliola Coreen Takemi Vehikite — Graduated from Lahainaluna High School. She plans on majoring in health services at Edmonds College in Washington. She participated in MIL softball and volunteered in Bible studies at her church.

All students satisfactorily met the application qualifications for the Royal Order’s Scholarship Awards and their personal essays described the various ways each one plans to enrich our Maui community.
