Builder, entrepreneur to address Rotary club

Ridgeline Homes Inc. Vice President Joshua Lindsey will be the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Kahului’s virtual meeting from noon to 1 p.m. on Monday.

Lindsey is a home builder, entrepreneur and vice president of his family’s construction firm, Ridgeline Homes Inc. His family has built more than 1,500 homes on Maui in the last 40 years.

Lindsey will be discussing Ridgeline Homes Inc. and the construction industry.

Foundation awards first scholarship

The Henry S. Yogi Foundation has awarded a $5,000 academic scholarship to Puniawa Kuloloio Vedder.

The foundation was established by longtime Maui golf professional and teacher Henry Yogi to help junior golfers of low to moderate income reach their educational goals and become upstanding citizens.

Vedder is the first recipient of the Henry S. Yogi Scholarship. He will attend the University of Hawaii Maui College this fall and credits golf for teaching him to remain calm under pressure and to respect others on and off the golf course.

Napili Kai Foundation awards scholarships

The Napili Kai Foundation has awarded $34,000 in academic scholarships to seven students.

The recipients are Joanna Marie Acosta, Brianna Bandy, Kylie Ines, Iverly Navarro, Ira Navarro, Tori Kaimana Tihada and Leah Werblun.

The Napili Kai Foundation scholarship program provides financial aid to high school graduates who are seeking self-improvement through education. Recipients are graduates of the Napili Kai Foundation or children of Napili Kai Beach Resort employees.

$600K raised in ‘Live United’ campaign

Maui United Way has raised more than $600,000 through its 2020-21 “Live United” campaign.

The funds will benefit 39 health and human services programs in Maui County.

“The campaign during a difficult time was made possible as a result of over 300 businesses and individuals who provided their time and money in order to ensure that the needs of fellow community members were fulfilled,” said Maui United Way President Nicholas Winfrey. “We are so grateful to the amazing individuals and businesses who have continued their trust and support for your Maui United Way. Your generous contributions of time, talent and financial support will continue to make an impact within Maui, Lanai and Molokai for years to come.”

Portuguese association awards scholarships

Four college-bound students from Maui County have each received a $1,000 scholarship from the Portuguese Association of Maui.

The recipients are Manuel Kupa’a Castro, Connor Fernandez, Kaitlyn Purdy and Makaylen Tadeo.

Castro is a 2021 graduate of Lahainaluna High School and will begin his studies this fall at St. Martin’s University in Lacey, Wash., where he plans to earn a degree in civil engineering. Fernandez will be entering his third year at Northern Arizona University, where he is majoring in hotel and restaurant management. Purdy is a 2021 graduate of Lanai High School who will begin pursuing a degree in Japanese Studies at the University of Hawaii-Hilo this fall. Tadeo will be entering her junior year at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where she is currently pursuing a degree in criminal justice.

The Portuguese Association of Maui started its scholarship program in 2003. To date, the association has awarded $56,500 in scholarship grants to Maui County students.
