Credit union gives $20K in college scholarships

Maui County Federal Credit Union has awarded $1,000 scholarships each to 20 college-bound students from Maui County.

The recipients include 12 incoming college freshmen, six returning undergraduates and two graduate students. The recipients are Abigail Akamine, Karina Bhattacharya, Manuel Castro, Liam Chadli, Stacia Eng, Dylan Falces, Connor Fernandez, Anna Gragas, Sharae Hanchett, Lea Kashiwamura, Megan Koga, Issac Jon Lazo, Kobe Lilio, Shanelle Longboy, Jonathan Merchant, Mindy Montalvo, Dawson Nolasco, Matthew Paden, Avrilyne Quimangan and Kelsie Sparks.

“It has been a challenging year for students, with many families struggling financially. Maui County Federal Credit Union is committed to the value of a college education and its support of students in their endeavor to further their education and achieve their dreams,” said Gary Fukuroku, president and CEO of Maui County Federal Credit Union. “Now more than ever, we want to help Maui’s future generation continue their pursuit of a college education and chose to give an additional five scholarships this year for a total of 20 scholarships. We are honored to play a role in growing Maui’s future leaders.”

To date, the credit union has awarded scholarships totaling $257,000 to Maui County students who are pursuing higher education.
