Maui educator named ‘Teacher of Promise’

Baldwin High School science teacher William Kjontvedt was recently honored with a 2022 Teacher of Promise award for the state Department of Education’s Baldwin-Kekaulike-Maui Complex Area.

The annual Teacher of Promise award is granted to a classroom teacher who demonstrates outstanding commitment and potential during their first three years with the DOE. The award alternates annually between elementary and secondary teachers, with the state winner selected from a group of complex area honorees.

“H.P. Baldwin High School celebrates Mr. William Kjontvedt as the 2021-2022 Teacher of Promise Award recipient,” said Baldwin High School Vice Principal Marcía Balinbin. “He exemplifies characteristics of supportive relationships for all students. He is a sound teacher that wants to continuously learn how to craft his teaching and contributions to meet the needs of all stakeholders. Mr. Kjontvedt sets himself apart from all other beginning teachers because of character and commitment to all students, the school and the community.”

Hana High & Elementary School secondary teacher Briana Craig was also honored with a 2022 Teacher of Promise award for the Hana-Lahainaluna-Lanai-Molokai Complex Area.
