Kahului man charged with assault, burglary of Craigslist advertiser
A Kahului man was arrested for allegedly assaulting a man and burglarizing his residence after the two made contact last year through a Craigslist post, police said.
Bail was set at $35,000 for Wendell Ah Yee, 33. He was charged with first-degree burglary, two counts of second-degree unauthorized entry into a dwelling, two counts of unauthorized possession of confidential personal information and second-degree assault.
An all-points bulletin had been issued Nov. 29 for Ah Yee, after he was identified as the suspect in the crimes. He was arrested Thursday afternoon in Wailuku.
Police said Ah Yee had answered the victim’s Craigslist post seeking a friend on Nov. 22. The victim gave his address to Ah Yee, but changed his mind about meeting after a conversation about drugs, police said.
Ah Yee reportedly showed up at the victim’s residence and entered without permission Nov. 22 and Nov. 27. After the victim told Ah Yee to leave, he took the victim’s bank statements and insurance card, police said.
When Ah Yee returned to the victim’s residence at 11:45 a.m. Nov. 28, Ah Yee punched the victim and struck him with a plastic pipe when he opened the door, police said. The two fought in the kitchen, then in the hallway until the victim took away the pipe, police said.
The suspect fled, and the victim suffered a laceration to his forehead, police said.
Ah Yee was being held at the Maui Community Correctional Center.
