Hearing on food establishment rules set Tuesday at UH-MC
Amendments to sanitation regulations among updates offered
The Maui News
A public hearing on amendments to rules dealing with food establishment sanitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesday in the University of Hawaii Maui College’s Community Services building in Kahului.
The updates clarify certain definitions, requirements and permitting procedures, and establish new requirements for food establishments.
The state Department of Health in a public notice said that the amendments proposed are designed to improve public health outcomes by directly and indirectly lowering the risk of contracting food- and water-borne illnesses in the state.
The proposed amendments include the near-verbatim adoption of the 2013 Food and Drug Administration Model Food Code and require the mandatory food handler’s education for the people in charge at all food facilities to reduce the frequency of food-borne illnesses in the state.
A copy of the amended rules and the existing rules will be mailed to anyone who requests a copy and pays in advance for the copy and postage.
Requests may be made in writing to the Sanitation Branch, Department of Health, 99-945 Halawa Valley St., Aiea 96701. Requests may also be made by calling (808) 586-8000.
A copy of the proposed rules will be emailed or mailed at no cost to any existing Food Safety Code permit holder who requests a copy.
Written comments about the changes may be submitted at the meeting or to the mailing address above by close of business Dec. 16.
The current and amended rules may be viewed on Maui at Environmental Health Services, Department of Health, at the State Office Building, Room 300 at 54 High St. in Wailuku.
They are also available online at health. hawaii.gov/san.
