White, Carroll to lead Maui County Council
Mike White will continue to serve as chairman of the Maui County Council during the 2017-2019 term, his office announced Friday.
Council Member Robert Carroll will be vice chairman for the new term that begins Jan. 2, replacing Council Member Don Guzman. White’s office said Friday that it did not have further comment on the organization of the council. Guzman did not want to comment Friday.
Carroll also will serve as chairman of the Land Use Committee.
Council Member Riki Hokama retained his chairmanship of the Budget and Finance Committee.
Other leadership roles are being finalized and will be announced later, White’s office said in a news release.
“Over the past two years, we have had one of the most productive terms in recent history,” said White. “It is important to continue this momentum by finalizing the council’s internal administrative work early on, so we can focus on critical issues that directly impact Maui County residents.”
White took over as chairman of the council at the beginning of the current term, displacing Chairwoman Gladys Baisa in 2015. Baisa will be leaving the council at the end of the current term due to term limits.
“The council has much to do in the coming months, from continuing to tackle affordable housing, homelessness and water issues, just to name a few,” added Carroll. “We work for you and it is only through collaboration and working together will we find solutions to these many pressing matters.”
Following the general election Tuesday, there are three new faces on the council — Alika Atay, Yuki Lei Sugimura and Kelly King. The other council members who were re-elected were Guzman, Elle Cochran and Stacy Crivello.
The council’s inauguration ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. Jan. 2 in the Council Chambers. The gathering is open to the public.
