Auction set for remaining HC&S items

A pile of trash was dumped on a former cane haul road near Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar’s shuttered Puunene Mill on Jan. 20. Garbage and abandoned junk being dumped on farm land is nothing new. Plantation supervisors have said it has been a constant battle through the years to keep on top of the problem. Now that sugar operations have shut down and the plantation’s workforce has been cut from 675 to 15, dealing with the problem may turn out to be even more of a challenge. There will be another chance to bid on Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co. equipment on Feb. 9, when the company will sell items that were not ready to auction this past month, an auction official said Tuesday.

Unlike the two-day auction held on Jan. 18 and 19 at the Maui Beach Hotel and also live online, the February one-day auction will be a “timed online auction” only.

Mark Weitz, co-managing partner of GA Global Partners, the auction house which handled the previous auction, said a catalog of the new lots has not yet been prepared or posted.

He said a catalog could be ready by early next week, and he estimated that roughly 100 to 150 lots will be up for auction.

According to the Global Partners website, “featured items” include pickup trucks and equipment from the mechanic, machine/welding and auto shops.

HC&S closed down its sugar operations in December.
