Injured hiker airlifted to safety after fall

A 22-year old man from Idaho was airlifted to safety after falling while hiking in the Makamakaole Gulch in Kahakuloa on Friday afternoon.

The Fire Department’s Air One helicopter lowered rescuers by rope to the victim and his friend, who were at the base of a 90-foot waterfall, Fire Services Chief Edward Taomoto said.

Both men were airlifted to a landing zone on Kahekili Highway and were transferred to waiting paramedics at about 4:30 p.m., he said.

The injured man, who suffered a head injury, was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.

A Wailuku engine crew responded to the call at about 3 p.m. Friday near Mile Marker 8 on Kahekili Highway, Taomoto said. They arrived about a half-hour later and learned from other hikers that the injured man was about a 45-minute hike from the highway. That led firefighters to call in Air One with the rescue team.

The two men said they had been hiking when the victim lost his footing on slippery rocks and fell, sustaining the head injury, Taomoto said. It was not known how far the victim fell because the victim’s friend did not see the fall and the victim did not recall the incident.

Starting at $4.62/week.
