Riverbank reinforced
Suspended by a crane in Iao Valley State Monument on Wednesday morning, mason Tim Forcier of Manu Kupono Builders sprays a concrete mixture called “Shotcrete” on a 60-foot-high section of riverbank as co-worker Ha’a Kawaha signals the crane operator to raise them higher. The 410-foot-long section of bank below the monument’s tour bus parking lot and exit lane is being stabilized to prepare for the next phase of the project, a 10-foot stone revetment built at its base. The section of bank was severely eroded during heavy flooding in September. The popular tourist attraction is expected to reopen in June.
