Meeting set for Thursday in Hana

The Maui Invasive Species Committee and state Department of Health will hold a community meeting Thursday night on rising concerns over a recent outbreak of rat lungworm disease in East Maui.

The meeting is from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Helene Hall at 150 Keawa Place in Hana.

Maui District Health Officer Dr. Lorrin Pang will provide residents, farmers and gardeners information about the disease carried by snails, certain flatworms and other animals that feed on rat feces. Residents also will learn how they can avoid the disease and help clear their properties of the parasite.

For more information, call the department at (808) 984-8201.
