Programs get federal grants
Maui Economic Opportunity Inc. will receive an U.S. Department of Health and Human Services grant of $1,047,514 to help fund 13 Head Start centers on Maui and Molokai, according to an announcement from U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz.
The centers support comprehensive child development and family engagement for children up to age 5, Schatz said.
Head Start is a federal early childhood education program that helps children prepare for school.
Also, the West Hawaii Community Health Center will receive a $1.3 million grant for its comprehensive health services program for residents, regardless of income.
Schatz is a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee.
