2,351 cited during enforcement effort

Police officers issued 2,351 citations during the two-week “Click It or Ticket” enforcement campaign that ended June 4.

Traffic Section officers were assisted by patrol officers in the operation targeting seat belt, child restraint and pickup truck restriction violations.

The citations included 615 for seat belt violations, 28 for child restraint violations, 12 for pickup truck restrictions and 180 for use of cellphones or other mobile electronic devices.

A seat belt violation carries a fine of $102 for each vehicle occupant not wearing a seat belt. All occupants who are age 8 or older are required to use a seat belt while in a vehicle. Children up to age 3 must be secured in a child restraint seat. Children ages 4 to 7 must be secured in either a child restraint seat or booster seat. A child restraint violation requires a court appearance.

A pickup truck restriction violation carries a $72 fine. Under state law, all seats in the cab of a pickup truck must be occupied before anyone is allowed to sit in the bed of the truck. No one age 12 or younger is allowed to sit or ride in the bed of a pickup truck at any time. The fine for that offense is a $97.

Money collected from traffic fines goes to the state general fund.
