Lahaina meeting is to discuss land deal

An informational briefing on the conveyance of 3 acres of state land to the county near the Lahaina Civic Center will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the center social hall.

The state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands and the state Housing and Finance Development Corp. will conduct the meeting. The parcel is part of the Leali’i Parkway in the Villages of Leali’i state housing project.

This parcel is part of 20 acres around the Lahaina Civic Center that the county is eyeing for overflow parking and expansion of police, fire and public works services, Mayor Alan Arakawa told the County Council earlier this year.

The state is offering a $1 per year lease for 65 years for the site, he said. The land is part of the state’s Villages of Leali’i affordable housing project, but the site was not included in an environmental impact statement for expansion of the housing project, state housing officials said.
