Sewage spill fouls off Kahului Harbor

The state Health Department advised the public Thursday afternoon to stay out of the ocean from outside the Kahului Harbor breakwater to Linekona Street in Paukukalo because of a sewage spill.

A sewage spill near the county’s Wailuku wastewater pump station led to at least 25,000 gallons of sewage to flow into the Kahului Harbor area, the Clean Water Branch said in an advisory. Signs were posted and the public was advised to stay out of the water until the water is tested and signs come down, the branch said.

County spokesman Rod Antone said late Thursday afternoon that the flow to the ocean was stopped at 11 a.m. The leak was repaired at 3:55 p.m. Antone did not immediately have details about the total spillage, the cause and when the signs would be removed.
