County changing permit process for recreational facilities

The Maui News – Coaches, league organizers, school athletic directors and other sports officials will need to start applying for recreational facilities months before each season begins as part of the county’s new triennial permit process, the county has announced.

The county said that the new system will be more efficient than the year-round system, which sometimes resulted in facilities getting overbooked. The permit process will affect application requests for the majority of facility usage countywide, including athletic fields, multipurpose fields, courts, pools and gymnasiums.

In order to reserve county facilities and fields for the winter/spring season from Jan. 1 to April 15, application requests must be submitted to the department during the first two weeks in October, which this year runs from Oct. 2 to 13.

To reserve facilities for the summer season from April 16 to July 31, applications must be submitted during the first two weeks of January, which next year runs from Jan. 2 to 16.

To reserve for the fall season from Aug. 1 to Dec. 31, applications must be submitted during the first two weeks of May, which next year runs from May 1 to 14.

Application request packets will be available at all department permit offices and on the county website at mauicounty.

gov. Requests will be reviewed in the priority order outlined in the department’s administrative rules, which are also available at mauicounty.gov.
