Man injured in single-vehicle crash
A Kula resident was injured in a single-vehicle crash along Honoapiilani Highway on Friday, police said.
At about 7:30 p.m. Friday, the 57-year-old man was driving toward Lahaina in a white 2004 Ford sedan when the vehicle drifted left of center across the roadway and onto the opposite shoulder near Milepost 17, also known was “Cut Mountain,” said Maui Police Department Lt. Gregg Okamoto. The vehicle rolled onto its roof and came to rest upside-down on the shoreline above the waterline.
The southbound lane of Honoapiilani Highway was briefly closed while officers investigated and the vehicle was removed from the shoreline, Okamoto said.
Traffic was contraflowed in the northbound lane.
The man, who was alone in the vehicle, was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center by medics in critical condition. His condition was later upgraded as his injuries were determined to be non-life threatening, Okamoto said.
An initial investigation by officers did not detect signs of impairment by the driver.
