Swimmers advised to avoid harbor area
State Department of Health officials are advising people to stay out of the ocean north of Kahului Harbor because of a Wednesday morning sewage spill.
The county Department of Environmental Management reported that approximately 62,500 gallons of wastewater entered the ocean after an electrical failure led to the discharge from a Wailuku wastewater pump station. The problem was discovered at 10:20 a.m.
Until warning signs are removed, people should stay out of water from Kanaloa Avenue to Linekona Street, officials advised. Water samples were being collected.
The spill was stopped at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday. Repairs were ongoing as of 9:15 a.m. Thursday.
