Meeting on Kanaio site inspection set for Nov. 1

The Maui News

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will hold an informational meeting for the Kanaio Local Training Area site inspection from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 1 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Kula.

The Kanaio LTA was reportedly used as a training area by the Army and Marine Corps prior to 1965, according to a meeting announcement. In 1965, the Hawaii Army National Guard was granted access to Kanaio LTA for military training purposes. The area was closed in 2016 and is being evaluated under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act to determine future action.

The Corps of Engineers, Hawaii Army National Guard and their contractor will present an overview of the proposed work and address any questions regarding the project. The site inspection will enable the corps to assess any remaining munitions and munitions constituents at the Kanaio LTA.

Planned activities include geophysical and visual surveys and environmental sampling to determine type, quantity and concentrations of potentially present munitions and munitions constituents. The results of the site inspection will be used to determine if human health or ecological risks exist and whether further investigation.
