Man, 83, injured in West Maui fire

Five people were evacuated and one was injured after a fire broke out at a Napili home late Saturday, Fire Services Chief Edward Taomoto said.

At 10:09 p.m. Saturday, West Maui fire crews responded to a structure fire on Hale Malia Place in Napili, Taomoto said. Firefighters from Napili arrived at 10:15 p.m. and found the detached garage at the front of the home fully engulfed in flames.

Five adult family members were in the house when the fire started, Taomoto said. One family member discovered the fire and alerted the others. Neighbors had to help carry an 83-year-old man from the home. The man received moderate burns to his body while being carried out and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition. He was the only person injured in the incident.

Crews brought the fire under control at 10:24 p.m. and called it fully extinguished at around 12 a.m. Sunday, Taomoto said. Damage to the 500-square-foot garage and nearby main house was estimated at $130,000 to the structure and $30,000 to the contents.

Taomoto said that the cause of the fire could not be determined.

A battalion chief and fire companies from Napili, Lahaina and Kihei responded to the incident.
