Trucker Dukes 5K set Saturday

A memorial run dedicated to 3-year-old Haiku boy Trucker Dukes is set for Saturday at the old Maui High School in Hamakuapoko.

The Trucker Dukes Memorial 5K will begin at 8 a.m. at the old school on Holomua Road. The entry fee is $35 and includes a T-shirt, goodie bag and light refreshments.

Late registration is from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. with the opening ceremony to follow. Runners will start at the old school and run mauka toward Baldwin Avenue before turning around and finishing at the campus.

Runners are asked to carpool due to minimal parking. The course also is dusty and uneven, so runners are urged to plan accordingly.

UVSC, a Hawaii-based nonprofit, is hosting the run dedicated to Dukes, who died one year ago after battling stage 4 neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive pediatric cancer. The group, which stands for “U Versus Cancer” or “US Versus Cancer,” helps raise money for people with cancer while funding innovative research for a cure.

UVSC was founded in 2015 by two Mauians, cancer survivor Jamil Newirth and Chris Thibaut, who lost his father, Rob Thibaut, to cancer in 1997.

“Our goal is to bring the community together to celebrate Trucker and give back to other Maui families who are fighting pediatric cancer,” Trucker’s mother, Shauna, said. “We hope this event speaks to Trucker’s everlasting enthusiasm and love.”
