Bypass southern terminus to open Monday
The Maui News
The southern terminus of the Lahaina bypass will open about 6 a.m. Monday, the state Department of Transportation announced.
All northbound traffic will be routed to the bypass at the southern terminus, which starts at “cut mountain” near Olowalu. Honoapiilani Highway in the vicinity of the southern terminus will be contraflowed between 3 to 6 a.m. to prepare for the opening.
Traffic heading south toward Maalaea will need to turn left onto Kai Hele Ku Street to access the bypass.
The section of Honoapiilani Highway three-quarters of a mile south from Kai Hele Ku Street (mauka of Launiupoko Beach Park) will be closed for three weeks while workers complete the southern connector road from the highway to the bypass. A story printed Monday incorrectly reported the traffic flow along the highway during this time.
Pedestrian access to the beach from Kai Hele Ku Street to the start of the work zone at the southern connector road will be open during the closure.
The 2.7-mile, $38.7 million phase of the bypass was blessed Sunday.
