Ige to speak at nisei vet event

Gov. David Ige will be the third speaker in the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center Leadership Series of talks on June 9.

The first two speakers were former Govs. George Ariyoshi and John Waihee.

Ige will speak about leadership and the nisei values that helped shape his career.

The event is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Kahili Golf

Course Nahele Ballroom in Waikapu. Tickets cost $35 each, a buffet lunch included.

Ige is the state’s eighth governor. When he was sworn in Dec. 1, 2014, he became the fourth native-born governor of Hawaii and the first governor in the United States of Okinawan descent.

Ige and his wife, Dawn Amano-Ige, both have fathers, Tokio Ige and Sakuji Amano, respectively, who served in the 100th Infantry Battalion and 442nd Regimental Combat Team during World War II.
