Kihei man dies from crash injuries

A Kihei man who suffered life-threatening injuries when his truck was struck on North Kihei Road early this month has died of his injuries, police said.

Sione Tonga, 33, was pronounced dead around 5:15 p.m. May 9 at Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu.

The crash occurred around 10:30 p.m. May 2 when Tonga made an illegal U-turn in his white 1990 Ford Ranger pickup truck from the makai shoulder of North Kihei Road, police said. The driver of a garbage truck traveling south on the road was unable to stop and slammed into the truck’s driver’s side about 2 miles south of Honoapiilani Highway.

Tonga was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center and later transferred to Queen’s, police said.
