Kihei road open after tree brought down power lines

South Kihei Road reopened early Sunday morning after a tree took down some power lines and forced a closure of the road Saturday evening.

At 6:03 p.m. Saturday, around 932 customers in the Kihei area experienced a power outage when a large tree brought down power lines and blocked South Kihei Road, according to the county’s notification system and Maui Electric Co. spokesperson Shayna Decker. The road was closed to traffic in both directions.

Decker said power was restored to the majority of customers by 9:45 p.m. Saturday, with a remaining 11 customers brought back online by 4:20 a.m. Sunday after crews completed repairs to the downed lines.

By 5:10 a.m. Sunday, the road was open again, according to the county.
