Water catchment talk at market

Chris Baz, owner and president of Eco Products Maui, will speak on water catchment, storage, pumping and filtration at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Keokea nursery site, Mile Marker 16.7 of Kula Highway, next to Grandma’s Coffee House.

The free mini-lecture is part of the biweekly Keokea Farmers Market from 9:30 to 1 p.m. on the second and last Saturdays of each month, coinciding with Kula Hospital’s Hale Ku’ai Thrift Shop hours.

At the Keokea Farmers Market, Keokea and Waiohuli homestead farmers sell fresh produce. Market organizers also invite crafters and other community vendors to host a booth for $10 per 10-by-10-foot space. Vendors must bring their own tent, table and chairs.

Fire ceremony set at Lahaina mission

Soho Machida, abbot of Arigato Temple, beneath Mt. Fuji, and professor emeritus of Hiroshima University, will conduct a traditional Japanese “Goma” Gratitude Fire Ceremony at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Lahaina Jodo Mission.

The ceremony is in commemoration of 150th anniversary of Japanese immigration to Hawaii.

The celebration also includes music by Masako and Nobu Yoshida, a presentation of taiko drumming by Maui Taiko and sutra chanting.

The event is open for the public. Participants can write their wishes on wooden sticks and place them in the fire.

Machida also will conduct his Arigato Gratitude Zen Meditation session at 4 p.m. Saturday at Lahaina Jodo Mission and at 1 p.m. Sunday at Wailuku Jodo Mission. People interested in these sessions should email sohozenMaui@gmail.com. For more information, call 661-4304.

The Vision Impairment and Blindness Education and Peer Support Group will meet from 1 to 2:30 p.m. May 30 at Ohana Health Plan, 285 W. Kaahumanu Ave. in Kahului.

Buyers wanted for 4-H livestock

Up for auction: Seven steers, 30 hogs, three lambs and seven nanny goats from the Maui 4-H Livestock market project.

The animals will be auctioned starting at 1 p.m. June 2 at the Upcountry Fair in Makawao’s Oskie Rice Arena.

This year, 4-H Livestock is celebrating its 100th anniversary in Hawaii.

Park seeks cultural practitioners

Haleakala National Park is seeking cultural practitioners from local communities for Hana No’eau, a series of cultural demonstrations that will be offered in the park’s Kipahulu and Summit districts.

The series is open to all practitioners. Past demonstrations have included lei crafters, hula, woodwork, stonework, weaving, ukulele lessons and more.

Schools and youth groups are especially encouraged to apply. The series will run from mid-July to mid-September. Summit District demonstrations will occur between 10 a.m. and noon on Saturdays. Kipahulu District demonstrations will occur between 1 and 3 p.m. on Sundays.

Through support from the park’s nonprofit partner, the Hawai’i Pacific Parks Association, an honorarium of $200 will be offered to each group of practitioners.

Spaces are limited and filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications can be found at any Haleakala National Park visitor center or at www.nps.gov/hale/getinvolved/index.htm.

Pukalani sale can use donations

Pukalani Community Association will have a rummage sale from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday in the Pukalani Elementary School cafeteria.

Donations can be dropped off 5 p.m.-9 p.m. Friday at the cafeteria on Iolani Street. The association welcomes household items, clothing, books, toys, tools and artworks, but cannot accept TVs, baby strollers and larger furniture.
