Public hearing set for Friday

A public hearing on the Maui County Council’s proposed fiscal 2019 budget will be held at 9 a.m. Friday in the eighth-floor Council Chambers of the Kalana O Maui Building in Wailuku.

The full council is scheduled to take a first-reading vote on the budget drafted by the Budget and Finance Committee.

The committee has come up with a nearly $753 million budget, which is $67 million, or around 8 percent, less than Mayor Alan Arakawa’s proposed budget of nearly $820 million.

The budget will need to undergo a second and final reading before it heads to Arakawa’s desk for final action.

The full council has until June 10 to take action on the budget; otherwise, the mayor’s proposed budget becomes law. The budget goes into effect July 1.
