Na Hula Kupuna O Kaunoa instructor Kaleo Luna-Schwartz dances during Thursday’s performance. Members of the group from Kaunoa Senior Center, under the direction of kumu hula Lucky Cabral, are practicing for a competition July 20-22 in Sacramento, Calif., but Luna-Schwartz said they’ll dance anywhere they are invited. “We dance for free and we love it,” she said. “We dance as much as we can and for whoever asks us.” She suggested those interested in having the halau dance for an event should call Kaunoa Senior Center. The center provides four hula lessons a week for adults, ages 55 and older.

SECOND PHOTO: With Mele Fong and husband Richard Tom providing the music, members of Na Hula Kupuna O Kaunoa perform the hula “Papalina Lahilahi” during Thursday’s Picnic for Poki under the monkeypod tree at Ka’ahumanu Church in Wailuku.

THIRD PHOTO: The free monthly performances are presented by Roselani Place and Ola Na Mele Productions.
