Two people died and a woman was critically injured when a van and motorcycle collided Friday afternoon at Piilani Highway and Welakahao Road in Kihei, police said.

The van was turning left from Welakahao Road onto Piilani Highway in front of the motorcycle, which was traveling south on the highway when the crash occurred before 1:30 p.m., police said.

The man operating the motorcycle was killed on impact and his female passenger was ejected, landing on the highway with critical injuries, police said.

The 48-year-old woman driving the van also died, police said. A passenger in the van was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center with a broken arm.

The crash shut down Piilani Highway, the main artery through South Maui, at about 1:30 p.m. Traffic was being rerouted down Kananai Road and Lipoa Street.

The highway was reopened about three hours later.

Nine people have died in crashes on Maui County roads this year, compared with four at the same time last year.
