81 animals get homes at event

A total of 81 animals found new homes during the annual “Clear the Shelters” event at the Maui Humane Society on Saturday, the nonprofit organization reported.

Started in 2015, the nationwide event aims to raise awareness of and encourage pet adoptions. All adoption fees were waived for the event, thanks to a grant from the Savitt Family Foundation, the Maui Humane Society said.

On Saturday, 54 cats, 12 dogs, eight rabbits, five guinea pigs and two turtles were adopted at the Humane Society.

According to cleartheshelters.com, more than 89,000 pets were adopted from more than 1,200 shelters across the country as of Monday, bringing the grand total since 2015 to 243,022 pets adopted.
