A 64-year-old Kahului man died when the electric personal mobility device he was riding was struck by a tow truck on Dairy Road at the Maui Marketplace on Monday afternoon, police said.

Van Tomita was in a marked crosswalk when he was struck by the 1992 Isuzu flatbed truck, police said. The crash occurred at about 1:10 p.m. at the south access to the Maui Marketplace.

The tow truck was making a right turn out of the Maui Marketplace onto Dairy Road when the collision occurred, police said.

Tomita was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he later died. The operator of the tow truck was not injured, police said.

The investigation is ongoing. Tomita is Maui County’s 14th traffic fatality this year, compared to seven at the same time last year.
