Old Makena Hotel coming down piece by piece

Demolition work continues at the old Makena Golf & Beach Club, formerly the Maui Prince Hotel. The concrete structure fronting Maluaka Beach is being methodically brought down and turned into recyclables by a crew from Northwest Demolition & Dismantling. A high-reach excavator tipped with a hydraulic processor is used to chew and smash the walls into manageable chunks. Once on the ground, the sections are crushed and separated into piles of iron, concrete, aluminum and steel to be recycled. The project is on track to be “substantially” complete by the end of the year. This photo was taken Sept. 7.
