More volunteers sent to California

Two volunteers from Maui are among 10 Hawaii residents deployed to California to help provide shelter, food and comfort to victims of wildfires in California, according to an announcement from the American Red Cross.

Red Cross volunteers remain dispatched to affected areas. Those include two from Maui, four from the Big Island and four from Oahu, Red Cross officials said.

The Hawaii contingent includes four nurses and an emergency medical technician to provide health services. Another two volunteers are helping with mental health services. One is helping with transportation, and two others are assigned to shelters.

As of Monday, more than 1,000 people remained displaced and were sheltered at eight Red Cross and independent community shelters in Northern California.

Overall, more than 2,000 Red Cross disaster workers have been sent to help wildfire victims, and nearly 500 volunteers remain in the area. Working with partners, the Red Cross has provided more than 107,700 meals and snacks in a little more than three weeks.
