Yoshinobu Fukunaga of Ikoma, Japan, trims the hedge fronting Lahaina Shingon Mission’s Hokoji Temple on Saturday morning. Fukunaga is visiting daughter Miho Meguro and her husband, Takayuki Meguro, who is the priest for the temple. Takayuki Meguro said they were getting ready for New Year’s festivities, including mochi-pounding Saturday and services scheduled for 7 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and 10 a.m. New Year’s Day. He said Fukunaga is a retired teacher who volunteers his time, including by helping people after disasters like storms and tsunamis.

In this photo by a neighbor who wished to remain anonymous, the stolen red Toyota Tacoma driven by 26-year-old Kaulana “Toji” Reinhardt is seen in the yard of a home on the corner of Market and Kaohu streets in Wailuku. Police say Reinhardt pulled out a handgun and exchanged shots with police. He was hit and was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he died from his injuries. Police had been searching for Reinhardt, who was wanted on several outstanding warrants, including one for attempted murder.
