Temple hedge gets a trim by Japanese visitor

Yoshinobu Fukunaga of Ikoma, Japan, trims the hedge fronting Lahaina Shingon Mission’s Hokoji Temple on Saturday morning. Fukunaga is visiting daughter Miho Meguro and her husband, Takayuki Meguro, who is the priest for the temple. Takayuki Meguro said they were getting ready for New Year’s festivities, including mochi-pounding Saturday and services scheduled for 7 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and 10 a.m. New Year’s Day. He said Fukunaga is a retired teacher who volunteers his time, including by helping people after disasters like storms and tsunamis.
