Volunteers needed for invasive removal

An invasive plant removal project by Haleakala National Park and the Pacific Whale Foundation, set for Saturday, is seeking volunteers.

Waele ma Haleakala volunteers will be removing young pine trees and other invasive plants from the Summit District.

Volunteers will be picked up at Maalaea Harbor at 7:30 a.m. or at the main parking lot of the Pukalani Community Center at 8 a.m. Participants will work for three hours, visit the summit, and will be dropped off by 3 p.m.

Volunteers should bring water, snacks and sun protection; wear sturdy shoes and dress in layers. Some of the work will be on uneven surfaces.

Transportation, training, hand tools, gloves and other equipment will be provided.

Space is limited to 11 people and the deadline to sign up is 7:30 a.m. Friday. Call the whale foundation at 249-8811.

Waele ma is held on the first and third Saturdays of the month Volunteers receive a Hawai’i Tri-Park Pass after 12 volunteer hours, through a donation from the Hawai’i Pacific Parks Association.
