Burned-out vehicles mar scenic ocean views

A burned-out camper truck sits along North Kihei Road on Wednesday afternoon. The truck, moped and van looked to be a makeshift homeless camp set up between the road and Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge. The county Department of Environmental Management said Thursday that it received the police report on the vehicle Wednesday and that the vehicle will be removed today. Jennifer Aievoli, administrator of the department’s Abandoned Vehicles & Metals Program, encourages the public to call the Police Department’s nonemergency line at 244-6400 (select 0) to report abandoned vehicles and to start the removal process and avoid vandalism. The county charges registered owners for all towing, storage and disposal costs. For more information about abandoned vehicles on public roadways, visit www.mauicounty.gov./avm.
