Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge remain locked

The gates at the Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge remain locked Wednesday morning. Signs posted say the refuge is closed due to “the lapse in federal appropriations.” Though the sign said the refuge was closed and that access is prohibited, people were parking outside the gates and walking in anyway. Early in the shutdown in late December, Kealia Pond officials said that the refuge was closed. There are only four staffers at the refuge and one or two may be working without pay.
