Pukalani man, 35, dies in single-car crash in S. Maui

A 35-year-old Pukalani man was killed early Saturday morning when the vehicle in which he was a passenger went out of control on Piilani Highway in Kihei south of its intersection with North Kihei Road, Maui police said. The accident was reported at 3:53 a.m.

Police said a driver and two passengers were in a 2015 Toyota four-door sedan heading northbound on Piilani Highway when the vehicle went out of control and traveled into the southbound lanes. It then collided with a fence on the grass median and went into a ditch, causing the vehicle to go airborne and roll several times before coming to a stop in the southbound lanes.

The passenger, identified by police as Jordan Lawrence, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and another passenger suffered life-threatening injuries and were transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment.

A portion of Piilani Highway between Kaiwahine Street and North Kihei Road was closed to traffic for about five and a half hours as police conducted the investigation.

None of the vehicle’s occupants were wearing seat belts, police said.

The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol is pending investigation.

The incident is Maui County’s second traffic fatality of 2019 as compared to none at the same time last year.
