A self-serve kiosk for car registrations, which will be available 5 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily, will be opening Monday at the Maui Lani Safeway.

This will be the state’s first kiosk of its kind, which will allow residents to use a touchscreen to process and print vehicle registration cards and emblems, the county Department of Finance said Friday. The SST machine accepts payments by credit or debit card.

Currently, residents have to go to the Maui County Service Center at the Maui Mall or a Department of Motor Vehicle and Licensing satellite office, which often means standing in line or going only during business hours, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

“These new terminals will save customers time and be open conveniently at night and on weekends,” said Mayor Michael Victorino. “I’m excited any time we expand services for our customers.”

A kiosk also is available at the Maui Mall service center — which also accepts cash payments — and work currently is underway to install the machine at Safeway markets in the Lahaina Cannery Mall and in the Piilani Village Shopping Center.

“We will closely monitor customer use of these new kiosks to see how they impact service center operations, reducing wait times for other customers, for example,” said acting Finance Director Scott Teruya. “I’m hopeful that we can get the Kihei and Lahaina kiosks up and running by the end of the month.”

Customers are able to perform the following transactions, provided their vehicle’s safety inspection is current:

• Renew their car, truck, motorcycle and trailer registrations.

• Renew an expired registration up to 10 months and two weeks after expiration.

The project vendor is Intellectual Technology Inc. It specializes in kiosks that help division of motor vehicle agencies throughout North America increase the speed, visibility and security of motor vehicle document processing.

A grand opening for the kiosk will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Safeway.
