Brush burns at campsite

A makeshift campsite in Kula burned Tuesday morning in brush between Keanuhea Street and Kula Highway, a fire official said.

The fire was reported at 8:50 a.m., with crews arriving to find the campsite completely burned, said Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsushiro. He said the Fire Department’s Air One helicopter was called to drop water because of the remote location that was difficult to reach with firefighting vehicles.

The fire was quickly contained and extinguished at about noon, Yatsushiro said.

Makawao and Kahului firefighters responded.

Yatsushiro said the cause of the fire is unknown.
