Transportation topic of meeting

Transportation options in South Maui and a road user charge system will be the topic of presentations at the Kihei Community Association’s meeting on Tuesday.

Lauren Armstrong, executive director of the Maui Metropolitan Planning Organization, will discuss multimodal transportation options for South Maui. Robin Shishido, Maui District engineer with the state Department of Transportation, will also talk about the road user charge system that the state is considering. The system would charge drivers for actual miles driven instead of for the amount of fuel their vehicle consumes via a tax at the pump.

Paul Haake, captain of the Maui Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Bureau, will also give a talk about fire safety.

The meeting will take place in Stawasz Hall at St. Theresa Church in Kihei. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the meeting will start at 6:30. The association encourages generous nonperishable donations for the Maui Food Bank.

South Maui Rep. Tina Wildberger will also be holding a community talk story before the association meeting at 6 p.m. in the same location, said association President Mike Moran, though the talk story is not part of the meeting.
