A man was arrested early Monday after he swung a machete at a van, shattering glass, while a man and woman were in the vehicle in a Kahului parking lot, according to police.
Dana Sabog, 54, of Kahului was charged with first-degree terroristic threatening and first-degree criminal property damage. His bail was set at $6,000.
The man and woman were sitting in the white 2000 Ford van while it was parked in the Kahului Safeway parking lot at 12:35 a.m. Monday when Sabog pulled up and parked near them, police said.
Sabog first approached the man, who was in the driver’s seat, then walked to the passenger side and got into a confrontation with the woman, police said. Sabog brandished an 18-inch machete and swung it at the van, hitting the partially open passenger window, which shattered, according to police.
Glass shards hit the woman before the driver started the van and fled before calling police.
Sabog also fled from the parking lot and was located shortly after 1 a.m. in the parking lot of Home Depot in Kahului, police said.
During his initial appearance Monday in Wailuku District Court, Sabog was ordered to stay away from the victims and to stay away from the Kahului Safeway parking lot.
