First photo: Koko Wolbe of Chado Urasenke Tankokai Maui Association carefully ladles hot water into a bowl during a traditional Japanese tea ceremony demonstration Sunday afternoon at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Schaefer International Gallery. The water heats the bowl and allows the tea to get more frothy while it’s being vigorously stirred with the chasen, or bamboo whisk. Guests enjoyed small sweets with their bowls of tea while learning about the traditions passed on by 16th-century tea master Sen no Rikyu. The event went along with Maui artist Sidney Yee’s “Wabi-Sabi” exhibit, currently on display at the Schaefer gallery.
