Beating the heat with dip in Wailuku River
Dad Drake Daniels of Wailuku helps 17-month-old daughter Noelle work on her swimming technique Friday in Wailuku River near Kepaniwai Heritage Gardens in Iao Valley. Daniels, who works as a greeter at Kahului Airport, said the cool valley waters were a welcome relief from this week’s record-setting temperatures. “It was 96 the other day at the airport,” he said. “Spending the day in Iao Valley definitely beats that.” As a heat wave continued to sweep through Central Maui, Kahului reached 94 degrees Friday, breaking the old record for the date of 90 degrees, set on May 24, 2013. It’s the sixth time in the past seven days that Kahului has broken a temperature record.
