Crash caused by man throwing bottle

A 25-year-old Lahaina man was arrested Sunday after a report that he was throwing glass bottles at passing vehicles, hitting one that then swerved and collided with an oncoming vehicle on Lower Honoapiilani Road, according to police.

Soliga Taimovai was charged with second-degree reckless endangering, third-degree criminal property damage, harassment and disorderly conduct. His bail was set at $2,500.

Police were called at 4:48 p.m. to the roadway fronting Honokowai Beach Center after Taimovai threw a 40-ounce glass beer bottle that struck the rear passenger door of a vehicle traveling south on the road, according to police. Three children were passengers in the vehicle driven by a woman, police said. The driver swerved into the northbound lane, colliding with an oncoming vehicle, police said.

A couple of hours earlier, at 2:53 p.m. Sunday, police were called to Honokowai Park to investigate a report of domestic abuse. Police said Taimovai had gotten into a heated argument with his girlfriend and punched her arm, police said.
